NAN GOLDIN ‘This Will Not End Well’ – Rétrospective de ses films & slideshows – HangarBicocca Milan – Jusqu’au 15 février 2026.

Jusqu’au 15 février 2026, HangarBicocca présente « This Will Not End Well », la première exposition consacrée à l’œuvre de Nan Goldin en tant que cinéaste. Cette édition italienne réunit le plus important ensemble de diaporamas jamais présenté, enrichi de deux œuvres inédites, exposées pour la première fois en Europe dans un contexte muséal, et d’une création originale : une installation sonore immersive qui fait écho à la force émotionnelle des installations de Goldin.

La rétrospective est installée dans des bâtiments uniques conçus par Hala Wardé, architecte collaboratrice régulière de Goldin. Chaque bâtiment est pensé en écho à une œuvre spécifique. Ensemble, ils forment un village. Si le titre de l’exposition, « This Will Not End Well », peut paraître sombre et inquiétant, il est aussi empreint d’un humour ironique et d’une grande chaleur. Ce titre est une affirmation de la joie de vivre inébranlable qui caractérise Goldin.

L’exposition comprend : La Ballade de la dépendance sexuelle (1981-2022), son œuvre majeure ; L’Autre Côté (1992-2021), un portrait historique réalisé en hommage à ses amis transgenres qu’elle a photographiés de 1972 à 2010 ; Sœurs, Saintes, Sibylles (2004-2022), un témoignage du traumatisme des familles et du suicide ; Saut de feu (2010-2022), une incursion dans le monde des enfants ; Mémoire perdue (2019-2021), un voyage claustrophobique à travers le sevrage de la drogue ; et Sirènes (2019-2020), un voyage dans l’ecstasy. À Milan, l’installation Sisters, Saints, Sibyls (2004–2022) sera présentée à l’intérieur du « Cubo », un espace dont les dimensions et la hauteur sous plafond — s’élevant à plus de 20 mètres — ressemblent étroitement à la nature architecturale et à la verticalité de la Chapelle de la Salpêtrière à Paris, où l’œuvre a été initialement commandée et exposée en 2004. L’installation au Pirelli HangarBicocca sera recréée sous une forme fidèle à l’originale, y compris les éléments sculpturaux, visibles depuis une plateforme d’observation surélevée.

Pour l’exposition au Pirelli HangarBicocca, deux diaporamas supplémentaires seront présentés : « You Never Did Anything Wrong » (2024), première œuvre abstraite de Goldin, née d’un mythe ancien selon lequel une éclipse est provoquée par des animaux volant le soleil, est une méditation poétique sur la vie, la mort et les cycles naturels qui relient tous les êtres. « Stendhal Syndrome » (2024), quant à elle, s’inspire de six mythes différents des Métamorphoses d’Ovide, mis en scène par les portraits d’amis de Goldin, dans un dialogue visuel à travers le temps entre l’expérience personnelle de l’artiste et ses photographies de peintures et de sculptures provenant de musées du monde entier.

Par ailleurs, la rétrospective à la Navate s’ouvrira sur une nouvelle installation sonore du collectif d’art sonore expérimental Soundwalk Collective, conçue en étroite collaboration avec l’artiste comme un prélude guidant les visiteurs vers le village symbolique de diaporamas de Goldin.

Nan Goldin (née à Washington D.C. en 1953) est l’une des artistes les plus importantes de notre époque. Son œuvre, qui explore l’expérience humaine, est légendaire et a profondément influencé les générations suivantes. Son premier ouvrage, « The Ballad of Sexual Dependency », documente la vie à Provincetown, New York, Berlin et Londres des années 1970 et 1980 jusqu’à nos jours. Goldin a photographié avec une tendresse brute l’univers de son cercle d’amis créatifs et bohèmes. Ses photographies nous offrent des instantanés d’intimité et de vie à deux, du quotidien aux fêtes les plus débridées, et de la lutte entre autonomie et dépendance.

Issue d’une génération marquée par la liberté d’avant le sida et un monde alternatif en marge de la société, l’œuvre de Goldin témoigne également de son époque. Vers 1980, elle a commencé à présenter ses diaporamas dans divers clubs et lieux publics new-yorkais, ainsi que dans des cinémas underground et des festivals de cinéma en Europe. Elle mettait à jour et remaniait son diaporama à chaque fois, utilisant plusieurs projecteurs sur fond de musique éclectique. Cette capacité à revisiter ces diaporamas est depuis devenue le cœur de sa pratique artistique. Au cours des quarante dernières années, Goldin a réalisé une douzaine de diaporamas différents, allant de portraits d’amis à des récits d’événements familiaux traumatisants. Depuis, elle a intégré à ses œuvres des éléments tels que des images animées, des voix et des documents d’archives.

Outre l’influence de Goldin sur l’art et le monde de l’art, il est difficile d’envisager la photographie de mode et publicitaire contemporaine sans évoquer ses paradigmes novateurs d’expression visuelle.

From October, 2025 to February 15, 2026, HangarBicocca will present “This Will Not End Well,” the first exhibition dedicated to the work of Nan Goldin as a filmmaker. The Italian iteration reunites the biggest corpus of slideshows ever presented together, featuring two additional works, displayed in a museum context for the first time in Europe, alongside a new commission, an immersive sound installation that resonate the emotional impact of Goldin’s installations.

The retrospective is installed in unique buildings designed by Hala Wardé, an architect who frequently works with Goldin. Each building is designed in response to the specific piece. Together they constitute a village. While the title of the exhibition “This Will Not End Well” may seem dark and foreboding, it is also full of ironic humour and warmth. The title is an affirmation of Goldin’s ’characteristically unshakeable joie de vivre.’

The exhibition is comprised of: The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (1981–2022) her magnum opus; The Other Side (1992– 2021) a historical portrait produced as an homage to her trans friends whom she photographed from 1972 to 2010; Sisters, Saints, Sibyls (2004–2022) a testament to the trauma of families and suicide; Fire Leap (2010–2022) a foray into the world of children; Memory Lost (2019–2021) a claustrophobic journey through drug withdrawal; and Sirens (2019–2020) a trip into drug ecstasy. In Milan, the installation Sisters, Saints, Sibyls (2004–2022) will be presented inside the “Cubo,” a space whose dimensions and ceiling height—rising over 20 meters—closely resemble the architectural nature and verticality of La Chapelle de la Salpêtrière in Paris, where the work was originally commissioned and shown in 2004. The installation at Pirelli HangarBicocca will be restaged in a form faithful to the original, including the sculptural elements, visible from an elevated viewing platform.

For the exhibition in Pirelli HangarBicocca two additional slideshows will be included: You Never Did Anything Wrong (2024), Goldin’s first abstract work, born from an ancient myth that an eclipse is caused by animals stealing the sun, is a poetic meditation on life, death and the natural cycles that connect all beings. And Stendhal Syndrome (2024), based on six different myths from Ovid’s Metamorphosis that are brought to life by Goldin’s portraits of her friends, in a visual dialogue across time between the artist’s personal experience and her photographs of paintings and sculptures from museums around the world.
Furthermore, the retrospective in the Navate will open with a new sound installation by the experimental sound art collective Soundwalk Collective, conceived in close collaboration with the artist as a prelude that guides visitors into Goldin’s symbolic village of slideshows.

Nan Goldin (born in Washington D.C. in 1953) is one of the most high-profile artists of our time. Her work’s exploration of the human experience is legendary and has profoundly influenced subsequent generations. Her first work, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, documents life in Provincetown, New York, Berlin and London beginning in the 1970s and 80s and up to the present day. Goldin photographed the world of her inner circle of creative, bohemian friends with raw tenderness. Her photographs give us snapshots of intimacy and coupling, the quotidian and wild parties, and the struggle between autonomy and dependency.
Of the generation whose experiences were defined by the freedom of life before AIDS and an alternative world outside normative society, Goldin’s work also stands as a document of the times. Around 1980 Goldin began presenting her slideshows in various clubs and public venues in New York, as well as at underground cinemas and film festivals in Europe. She updated and reedited her slideshow every time and used multiple projectors, which she operated against the background of an eclectic soundtrack. Goldin’s ability to revisit these slideshows has since formed the core of her artistic practice. Over the past 40 years Goldin has produced a dozen different slideshows – from portraits of her friends to accounts of traumatic family events. Since then, she has added elements into her works such as moving images, voices and archival materials.

Alongside Goldin’s influence on art and the art world, it is also difficult to think of today’s fashion and advertising photography without reflecting on her ground-breaking paradigms of visual expression.
