L’alchimiste moderne Joris Van de Moortel fait reculer les limites de son spectre avec une nouvelle exposition solo. Dans ‘HELL ON EARTH, in search of Pur, Nur and Fur’, il propose un voyage d’exploration au S.M.A.K. du 5 octobre 2024 au 2 mars 2025. Une nouvelle étape de son pèlerinage qui a précédemment fait arrêt à De Warande.

Depuis plus de 15 ans, Joris Van de Moortel (°1983, Oostakker-Lourdes ; vit et travaille à Hoboken) développe un art multidisciplinaire qui défie les frontières et les conventions. Son atelier est comme un laboratoire de l’imaginaire, où l’alchimiste moderne qu’il est tente des expérimentations sur les matériaux et les idées. Là où l’alchimiste traditionnel cherchait la vie éternelle et la formule pour fabriquer de l’or, Van de Moortel semble viser un autre trésor : un chemin à travers le chaos d’un monde qui change rapidement. Dans le même temps, il reste fidèle à l’essence de l’art, de la connaissance et de l’imagination.

Dans ses interventions musicales, ses sculptures et ses peintures comme dans ses films et ses cartes de tarot, on trouve une profusion d’énigmes, de jeux de mots, de références à l’histoire de l’art. Son langage visuel est caractérisé par une profonde aspiration à la créativité. Pour Van de Moortel, cette esthétique chaotique est nécessaire pour susciter un débat critique sur les rapports complexes entre nature, culture, art, religion et société contemporaine. 

Avec HELL ON EARTH, in search of Pur, Nur and Fur, Joris Van de Moortel crée une installation saisissante qui remplit et transforme l’espace du S.M.A.K.. De nouvelles peintures à l’huile, aquarelles, sculptures, vidéos et musiques sont réunies dans un décor presque ésotérique, où chaque recoin raconte une histoire, tantôt pleine d’espoir, tantôt apocalyptiqu

HELL ON EARTH, in search of Pur, Nur and Fur n’est pas une exposition statique, mais une expérience totale. Van de Moortel anime l’installation avec des concerts live et des performances, où les limites entre l’œuvre d’art et le public s’estompent et où l’espace est imprégné d’une énergie unique.

Pour cette exposition, Van de Moortel sort une deuxième version de son jeu de cartes de tarot, un deuxième volume de la série de BD Mat & Babelario et un double vinyle regroupant quinze années de performance.

Modern alchemist Joris Van de Moortel pushes the boundaries of his spectrum with a new solo exhibition. The journey of discovery that is ‘HELL ON EARTH, in search of Pur, Nur and Fur’ unfolds at S.M.A.K. from 5 October 2024 to 2 March 2025, the latest stop of the pilgrimage that began in De Warande.

Joris Van de Moortel (b. 1983, Oostakker-Lourdes; lives and works in Hoboken) has been building his multidisciplinary oeuvre, which transcends borders and defies conventions, for more than 15 years. His studio is akin to a laboratory of the imagination, where he experiments with materials and ideas like a modern alchemist. While traditional alchemists seek eternal life and gold, Van de Moortel seems to be striving for a different kind of treasure: a path through the chaos of a rapidly changing world. At the same time, he remains true to the essence of art, knowledge and imagination.

His musical performances, sculptures and paintings, not to mention his films and tarot cards, contain an abundance of puzzles, puns and art-historical references. A deep-seated creative urge characterises his visual language. For Van de Moortel, this chaotic aesthetic is essential for a critical discussion of the complex relationships between nature, culture, art, religion and contemporary.

With HELL ON EARTH, in search of Pur, Nur and Fur, Joris Van de Moortel creates an overwhelming installation that fills and transforms S.M.A.K.’s space. New oil paintings, watercolours, models, sculptures, videos and music converge in an almost esoteric setting, wherein every corner tells a story, sometimes hopeful, at other times apocalyptic.

HELL ON EARTH, in search of Pur, Nur and Fur is not a static exhibition, but a total experience. Van de Moortel brings the installation to life with live music and performances, blurring the boundaries between artwork and audience, and infusing the space with a unique energy.

On the occasion of the exhibition, Van de Moortel will release a second version of his self-developed tarot cards, a second volume in the comic series Mat & Babelario, and a double album on vinyl compiling fifteen years of performances
