Louisiana présente « Basquiat – Headstrong », une importante exposition monographique consacrée aux œuvres sur papier du légendaire artiste américain Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988). Cette exposition sera la première rétrospective exhaustive dédiée aux représentations de la tête humaine par l’artiste, incluant de nombreuses œuvres qu’il a choisies de garder secrètes de son vivant.

Devenu une icône, un mythe, une véritable marque, Basquiat a depuis longtemps transcendé les frontières de l’histoire de l’art pour devenir un phénomène mondial omniprésent : un jeune artiste noir qui a percé avec une profusion de têtes, de corps et de symboles puissants, avant de disparaître à l’âge de 27 ans. Depuis, la mythologie entourant sa vie et son œuvre n’a cessé de se renforcer ; aujourd’hui, elle s’est pleinement intégrée à la culture populaire.

Une Œuvre méconnue

Au sein de la production explosive et expressive de Basquiat, on trouve également un ensemble d’œuvres – des dessins à l’huile sur papier, datant principalement de la période 1981-1983 – qui s’articulent autour du motif de la tête et qui sont presque dépourvues des symboles et textes si caractéristiques de sa pratique.

Basquiat a conservé ces œuvres pour lui, et elles sont restées pratiquement inconnues du public de son vivant. Ces têtes n’étaient pas des études préparatoires pour des peintures ou des œuvres réalisées avec d’autres techniques. Ce sont des œuvres à part entière, qui invitent à une réflexion sur la pratique globale de Basquiat.

Ces dessins se caractérisent par un mouvement oscillant entre structure et désintégration ; ils représentent aussi bien des crânes et des études quasi anatomiques que des visages très stylisés. Leurs yeux et leurs bouches sont comme des portails s’ouvrant sur un espace intérieur, chaque tête faisant office de réceptacle d’énergie émotionnelle.

Le fait que ces œuvres n’aient émergé qu’après la mort de l’artiste permet de les considérer comme des traces intimes d’un processus artistique – un processus que Basquiat pouvait explorer et approfondir à maintes reprises.

Des œuvres qui bousculent les attentes

Nombre de ces œuvres se distinguent dans le canon du dessin du XXe siècle par deux caractéristiques majeures : d’une part, leur ambition dimensionnelle et, d’autre part, l’utilisation vibrante et riche de bâtonnets d’huile colorés, qui leur confère une gravité visuelle unique. Leur maîtrise et leur rareté remettent en question toute conception traditionnelle du médium – une qualité caractéristique de l’œuvre de Basquiat, d’abord visible dans ses interventions de street art new-yorkais, puis dans ses peintures.

« Basquiat – Headstrong » est la première exposition monographique consacrée à l’artiste dans un musée scandinave, et la première fois que cet ensemble de dessins fait l’objet d’une présentation exclusive dans un contexte institutionnel. L’exposition s’inscrit dans une série dédiée aux œuvres sur papier, dans laquelle le musée Louisiana a déjà présenté des artistes tels que Philip Guston, David Hockney, Nancy Spero, Vija Celmins, George Condo, Richard Prince et Ed Ruscha. Elle sera accompagnée d’une publication illustrée, fruit d’une recherche inédite.

Louisiana presents ‘Basquiat – Headstrong’, a major solo presentation of works on paper by legendary American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988). The exhibition is set to be the first comprehensive showing devoted to the artist’s depictions of the human head, including many works that the artist chose to keep to himself during his lifetime.

Occupying a position as an icon, myth and outright brand, Basquiat long ago burst out of the narrow confines of art history to become a ubiquitous global phenomenon: a young Black artist who broke through in a blitz of heads, bodies and potent symbols, only to vanish again at the age of 27. Since then, the mythology surrounding his life and work has only grown stronger; today it lives a life of its own in popular culture.

Almost unknown body of work

Amidst Basquiat’s explosive, expressive output, there is also a group of works – drawings in oilstick on paper, mainly from the period 1981-1983 – which revolve around the head as a motif and which are almost devoid of the symbols and text that are otherwise so characteristic of his practice.

Basquiat kept these works to himself, and they remained virtually unknown to the public during his lifetime. The heads were not preparatory studies for paintings or works in other media. They are works in their own right, and thus invite reflection on Basquiat’s overall practice.

The drawings are characterised by a movement between structure and disintegration; they range from skulls and somewhat anatomical studies to highly stylised faces. Their eyes and mouths are like portals opening up to an inner space, with each head as a vessel for emotional energy.

The fact that the works only emerged after the artist’s death makes it plausible to see them as intimate traces of an artistic process – something Basquiat could return to and study repeatedly.

Challenging expectations

Many of these artworks stand out in the canon of twentieth-century drawing because of two distinct features: first, their ambition in scale, and second, their vivid and rich use of colored oil sticks, which imbued these works with a unique visual gravitas. Their mastery and rarity challenge any expectations of the medium — a distinguishable quality observed throughout Basquiat’s production, first seen in his New York street art interventions and later in painting.

‘Basquiat – Headstrong’ is the first solo presentation of the artist at a museum in Scandinavia, and the first time this group of drawings has been given standalone focus in an institutional context. The exhibition stands out in a series dedicated to works on paper, in which the Louisiana has previously presented Philip Guston, David Hockney, Nancy Spero, Vija Celmins, George Condo, Richard Prince and Ed Ruscha, among others. It will be accompanied by an illustrated publication with newly commissioned research.
