PRESQUE UN PARADIS – La photographie de l’ère coloniale dans l’Art contemporain – Museum Rietberg, Zurich (CH) – 16 avril – 6 septembre 2026.

Presque un paradis… Vraiment ? Du 16 avril au 6 septembre 2026, le Musée Rietberg de Zurich présente Almost a Paradise, un group-show qui réunit vingt artistes internationaux qui dialoguent avec la photographie de l’époque coloniale et se confrontent à ses héritages de l’imagerie véhiculée par la période, avec des œuvres contemporaines qui traitent de la mémoire, du récit historique et de l’identité… De quoi rapatrier dans notre présent européen encore tout imprégné des relents du colonialisme qui a façonné nos imaginaires cette interrogation centrale qui interpelle notre histoire commune.

L’exposition présente les œuvres de 20 artistes travaillant sur les images historiques. À partir de photographies anciennes émergent de nouveaux espaces visuels et créatifs – complexes, parfois fantastiques, loin des récits familiers. Les images sont recontextualisées et transformées en mondes imaginaires où l’art peut être vécu comme une force de guérison.

Poétiques et visionnaires, les œuvres explorent comment l’imagerie coloniale continue de façonner l’identité, l’histoire et le sentiment d’appartenance. Outre la photographie, le film et la sculpture sont également présents – polyphoniques, riches en récits et inspirants. Une question se pose à la fin : et si ces mondes visuels devenaient réalité ?

Almost a paradise… Really? From April 16 to September 6, 2026, the Rietberg Museum in Zurich presents  Almost a Paradise , a group show that brings together twenty international artists who engage with photography from the colonial era and confront its legacy of imagery conveyed by the period, with contemporary works that deal with memory, historical narrative and identity… Enough to bring back into our European present, still steeped in the lingering effects of colonialism that shaped our imaginations, this central question that challenges our shared history.

The exhibition presents the works of 20 artists working with historical images. From old photographs emerge new visual and creative spaces – complex, sometimes fantastical, far removed from familiar narratives. The images are recontextualized and transformed into imaginary worlds where art can be experienced as a healing force.

Poetic and visionary, the works explore how colonial imagery continues to shape identity, history, and a sense of belonging. In addition to photography, film and sculpture are also featured—polyphonic, rich in narrative, and inspiring. A question lingers at the end: what if these visual worlds were to become reality?
