Thomas Schütte – Généalogies – Punta della Dogana, Venise – Jusqu’au 23 novembre 2025 – Commissariat par Camille Morineau et Jean-Marie Gallais

Pinault Collection présente, à la Punta della Dogana, la première grande exposition en Italie de l’artiste allemand Thomas Schütte (né en 1954, Oldenburg, Allemagne), dont le commissariat est assuré par Camille Morineau, conservatrice et commissaire indépendante, et Jean-Marie Gallais, conservateur auprès de la Collection Pinault.

Inclassable et protéiforme, l’œuvre de Thomas Schütte pose un regard inquiet et ironique sur la condition humaine en mêlant les techniques et les genres. Sculptures, modèles architecturaux, photographies, dessins et gravures constituent ainsi depuis la fin des années 1970 un véritable répertoire en évolution constante qui, selon les mots de l’artiste, vise à « introduire un point d’interrogation distordu dans le monde ».

L’exposition explore la circulation des motifs des principales œuvres de Schütte, des années 1970 à nos jours. Centré sur l’ensemble exceptionnel conservé par la Collection Pinault – près de cinquante sculptures – et complété par des prêts de l’artiste ainsi que d’une centaine d’œuvres sur papier, dont une grande partie inédite, le parcours retrace de manière non chronologique la naissance des formes et leurs variations, et les met en regard de la pratique du dessin, de l’aquarelle ou de l’estampe de l’artiste allemand.

Caricaturée, parfois malmenée, toujours émouvante, la figure chez Schütte, thème central des œuvres de la Collection Pinault, prend vie à travers l’argile, la cire, la céramique, le verre, l’acier ou le bronze, le portrait en pied ou la tête de caractère, tout en étant ancrée dans le dessin. Conciliant violence et ingénuité, intimité et théâtralité, sérieux et humour, l’univers singulier de l’artiste l’a imposé comme l’une des figures majeures de l’art contemporain.

Pinault Collection presents the first major exhibition of Thomas Schütte (b. 1954, Oldenburg, Germany) in Italy, at the Punta della Dogana, curated by Camille Morineau, independent curator, and Jean-Marie Gallais, curator at the Pinault Collection.

Unclassifiable and multi-faceted, Thomas Schütte’s takes an unsettling and ironic look at the human condition, blending techniques and genres. His sculptures, architectural models, photographs, drawings and engravings have since the late 1970s formed a constantly evolving oeuvre that, in the artist’s own words, aims to « introduce a distorted question mark into the world ».

The exhibition explores the flow of motifs in the artist’s major works, from the 1970s to the present day. Centred around the exceptional group of works belonging to the Pinault Collection (almost fifty sculptures) and accompanied by loans from the artist, as well as around a hundred works on paper, many of which have never been displayed before, the exhibition retraces, in a non-chronological way, the emergence of the forms and their variations, and compares them with the German artist’s practice of drawing, watercolour and printmaking.

Caricatured, sometimes mishandled, always poignant, Schütte’s figures – the central subject of the works in the Pinault Collection – come to life in clay, wax, ceramics, glass, steel or bronze, as full-length portraits or as heads of character, while remaining anchored in his drawing. Reconciling violence and ingenuity, intimacy and theatricality, seriousness and humour, the artist’s singular universe has earned him a major role in contemporary art.
