What is art? Where does it begin and end? Who decides what art is? What makes an artist? These fundamental questions are at the heart of the work of Hans-Peter Feldmann (1941–2023), who is the subject of an extensive exhibition at the Kunstpalast in autumn 2025. The artist’s central themes were already evident in his early works and appear throughout his oeuvre: everyday life, social clichés, voyeurism, private and public spheres, the formation of taste, humour and satire, dreams and projections. From the very beginning of his career, Feldmann also systematically employed strategies of artistic appropriation, alienation and recontextualisation.

Comprising around 80 exhibits, the presentation clearly demonstrates the breadth of Feldmann’s oeuvre, from his early photographs from the 1970s to his sculptures using everyday objects, expansive installations and his more recent works, which will be on display in Düsseldorf for the first time. This is the first retrospective after Hans-Peter Feldmann’s death in May 2023 and the final exhibition in which he was actively involved

Qu’est-ce que l’art ? Où commence-t-il et où finit-il ? Qui décide de ce qu’est l’art ? Qu’est-ce qui fait un artiste ? Ces questions fondamentales sont au cœur de l’œuvre de Hans-Peter Feldmann (1941-2023), qui fait l’objet d’une vaste exposition au Kunstpalast à l’automne 2025. Les thèmes centraux de l’artiste étaient déjà présents dans ses premières œuvres et transparaissent tout au long de son œuvre : la vie quotidienne, les clichés sociaux, le voyeurisme, les sphères privées et publiques, la formation du goût, l’humour et la satire, les rêves et les projections. Dès le début de sa carrière, Feldmann a également systématiquement utilisé des stratégies d’appropriation artistique, d’aliénation et de recontextualisation.

Comprenant environ 80 pièces, la présentation illustre clairement l’étendue de l’œuvre de Feldmann, de ses premières photographies des années 1970 à ses sculptures utilisant des objets du quotidien, en passant par ses installations expansives et ses œuvres plus récentes, présentées pour la première fois à Düsseldorf. Il s’agit de la première rétrospective après la disparition de Hans-Peter Feldmann en mai 2023 et de la dernière exposition à laquelle il a activement participé.
