Portrait. Shirin Neshat – Photographe, védéaste, metteuse en scène – née en 1957 à Qazvin, Iran.

Shirin Neshat a mis en scène Aïda, actuellement donné à l’Opéra Bastille jusqu’au 4 novembre 2025*. A cette occasion, nous publions une galerie de ses réalisations photo et vidéo, ainsi qu’une présentation de son travail.

Fortement marquée par l’expérience de l’exil, l’œuvre de Shirin Neshat, Iranienne expatriée vivant aux États-Unis, explore les dimensions complexes de la condition des femmes dans l’Islam contemporain. Ses travaux photographiques et vidéographiques ont rencontré un énorme succès critique, alimentant parfois la polémique. En effet, certains commentateurs occidentaux reprochent à l’artiste de ne pas prendre explicitement position contre la révolution islamique. En 1974, la jeune fille part aux États-Unis afin d’y mener des études artistiques. En 1990, lors d’un retour en Iran, elle sera particulièrement impressionnée par les effets de la révolution islamique de 1979 sur la condition féminine. L’artiste commence par réaliser des séries photographiques : Unveiling [« Dévoilement »,1993] ; Women of Allah [« Femmes d’Allah », 1994]. Dans ses portraits ou autoportraits, toutes les femmes portent un tchador. Tracés directement sur les tirages, des textes énigmatiques en calligraphie farsi recouvrent invariablement les parties visibles de ces femmes voilées.

En 1997, le travail de la photographe prend une direction ouvertement cinématographique avec Turbulent – deux écrans donnent corps à un champ contre champ symbolique opposant un homme et une femme – qui lui vaut le prix international de la XLVIII^e Biennale de Venise (1999). Le même dispositif sera repris dans Rapture (1999) et Fervor (2000). Depuis 2003, l’artiste a adapté plusieurs vidéos à partir du roman de Shahrnoush Parsipur Femmes sans hommes (1990), censuré en Iran. À travers plusieurs histoires de femmes aux destins différents mais dont les vies s’entrecroisent au cours de l’été 1953, elle y aborde sans complexe plusieurs tabous d’ordre social et sexuel.

Shirin Neshat directed Aida, currently playing at the Opéra Bastille until November 4, 2025*. To mark the occasion, we are publishing a gallery of her photo and video work, as well as a presentation of her work.

Deeply influenced by the experience of exile, the work of Shirin Neshat, an Iranian expatriate living in the United States, explores the complex dimensions of the condition of women in contemporary Islam. Her photographic and video works have met with enormous critical acclaim, sometimes fueling controversy. Indeed, some Western commentators criticize the artist for not taking an explicit stance against the Islamic Revolution. In 1974, the young woman left for the United States to study art. In 1990, upon returning to Iran, she was particularly impressed by the effects of the 1979 Islamic Revolution on the condition of women. The artist began by producing photographic series: Unveiling [“Unveiling”, 1993]; Women of Allah [“Women of Allah”, 1994]. In her portraits or self-portraits, all the women wear a chador. Drawn directly onto the prints, enigmatic texts in Farsi calligraphy invariably cover the visible parts of these veiled women.

In 1997, the photographer’s work took an openly cinematic direction with Turbulent – two screens give form to a symbolic shot-reverse-shot opposing a man and a woman – which earned her the International Prize at the XLVIII Venice Biennale (1999). The same device would be used in Rapture (1999) and Fervor (2000). Since 2003, the artist has adapted several videos based on Shahrnoush Parsipur’s novel Women Without Men (1990), censored in Iran. Through several stories of women with different destinies but whose lives intertwine during the summer of 1953, she unashamedly addresses several social and sexual taboos.
