« ANDY WARHOL IN THE CLOSET », VILLA CROCE, GÊNES
“Andy Warhol in the Closet” / Villa Croce Contemporary Art Museum, Gênes (IT) / Jusqu’au 5 juillet 2015.
Villa Croce returns to being a private home decorated with design furniture hosting more than eighty works from an extroardinary Genovese collection never publicly exhibited. The works rigorously selected with a visionary outlook on the developments of contemporary art, are the result of a passion Rosetta Barabino shared with her youngest son that in more than thrity years took them visiting galleries and contemporary exhibitions in all of Italy.
The show presents works by seventy Italian and International artists from Andy Warhol to Carl Andre, from Donald Judd to Cy Twombly, from Dan Flavin to Robert Morris, with Joseph Beuys, Olafur Eliasson, Cindy Sherman, Gordon Matta-Clark, Takashi Murakami, Ettore Spalletti, Ai Wei Wei and Fischli & Weiss and Yang Fudong in order to reconstruct a personal version of art history through a series of important works that installed in a modern and sophisticated domestic environment (furnished with Vitra, Molteni and Schiffini furniture) demonstrate that contemporary art can become a source of daily inspiration and a way of succesfully investing in art.
The show highlights how Genova in the ’60s and ’70s was a hub for cutting-edge and international collecting that found in American Minimalism the crux of contemporary research. In the words of visionary international art-dealer Gian Enzo Sperone, mentor to an important part of the collection: “Madame Barabino belongs to that small élite of visionary collectors who sustaining avantgard artistic research, gave us young dealers the attention that was litterally the oxygen on which to survive.”
