JOHN STEZAKER IN DIALOGUE WITH MARCEL BROODTHAERS – Gallery Sofie Van de Velde, Antwerp – 13.10 > 26.11.2016
From October 19th till November 26th Gallery Sofie Van de Velde brings together two renowned artists who playfully walk the line between abstraction and reality, complexity and simplicity, with an exhibition about John Stezaker and Marcel Broodthaers.
In the seventies John Stezaker (British, 1948) and Marcel Broodthaers (Belgian, 1924-1976) met at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Fascinated by the relation between word, image and language, both artists take everyday objects out of their context and rearrange them in a seemingly illogical sequence, testing the boundaries of art.
Stezaker’s work touches the various possible relationships one might have to photographic images: as documentation of truth, purveyor of memory and symbol of modern culture. He cuts, rotates and recombines publicity shots of classic film stars to form unified images with his own witty meaning, constantly challenging the audience to look at photography from another perspective. Marcel Broodthaers also attempts to inject new perspective into everyday objects, such as the popular eggs and the mussel shells, common objects that were injected with a new meaning. Or illustrations from second hand bookstores completed with verbal puns.
