MALTA FESTIVAL POZNAN 2018, CURATED BY JAN LAUWERS & NEEDCOMPANY

Malta Festival Poznań 2018 – 15-24 june 2018 – Poznań (Pol)

The 28th edition of Malta Festival Poznań starts in a month. Today we are announcing the detailed program of the festival and we are launching the sale of entry tickets and accreditations. Malta Festival Poznań this year comprises of around 200 events – plays, concerts, films and urban interventions. Check out the program and come to Poznań from 15 to 24 June.

The festival will be initiated with a cathartic communal project – the construction and subsequent destruction of a cardboard replica of the tower artificially added to the Poznan Royal Castle which was reconstructed in the years 2011-2013. Many Poznanians call the it the “Gargamel’s Tower” and it was very controversial from the start. The innocuous but subversive gesture of Olivier Grossetête and dozens of volunteers will foreshadow numerous festival events which focus on the value of communal endeavour.

Communality is a subject which features large in the body of work of Jan Lauwers, Grace Ellen Barkey and Maarten Seghers (Needcompany) – the curators of this year’s Idiom Leap of faith. “Art needs to redefine itself and its function on every level. Therefore a leap of faith, a leap into the unknown, is a true definition of art. If you create art, you need to go into the unknown”, says Jan Lauwers. As a part of the Idiom we will show the plays of the founders of Needcompany, as well as the younger generations of artists associated with the Belgian group, including 1095 by Lisaboa Houbrechts & Kuiperskaai, The Moon MaisonDahlBonnema and War and turpentine by Jan Lauwers himself. The latter is a stage adaptation of a book by Stefan Hertmans under the same title.

Stefan Hertmans will be a guest at the Festival and he will meet with his readers as a part of the Forum, which is a cycle of conversations during which we discuss the Idiom. The meeting will be introduced by a staged reading of his drama Antigone in Molenbeek directed by Anna Smolar with Małgorzata Gorol as Antigone. It will be the first presentation of the drama in Poland.

This year’s special event will be the premiere of The Messiahs inspired by the novel by György Spiró. The play The Messiahs (or if there is nothing left for us to believe in, may we undermine something that we could believe in again) directed by Aneta Groszyńska is a theatrical coproduction of Malta Festival Poznań and Teatr Zagłębia in Sosnowiec. The script was written by Jan Czapliński and Marcin Kącki. György Spiró himself will appear at the festival in conversation with Adam Michnik as a part of the Forum cycle. The Forum conversations will also feature Anna Czerwińska, Katarzyna Surmiak-Domańska, Ludwik Dorn, Andrzej Leder, Zbigniew Mikołejko, Marek Abramowicz, Stanisław Mrówczyński and Andrzej Zybertowicz.

The heart of the festival will traditionally beat on Liberty Square. It is here that we will construct and demolish “Gargamel’s Tower”, take part in workshops, watch plays, and listen to concerts. The stage at the square will be graced by the likes of Magdalena Cielecka in The Silence of the Sirens, Paulina Przybysz, Jazz Band Młynarski-Masecki as well as BARDO – the Barbara Kinga Majewska and Bartłomiej Wąsik duo. We also invite you to Cafe Chantant and the traditional Silent Disco.

Malta Generator is the urban section of Malta Festival Poznań. Its theme this year is Doubting locality. “We will doubt in locality together, but not to turn away from it and abandon it, but to give it new contexts and meanings”, explain the Malta Generator curators – Joanna Pańczak i Agnieszka Różyńska.

The program of this year’s Malta Generator is focused around three subjects: artistic residencies on social housing estates, renovations in Poznan as well as newcomers.Three duos of artists: Adam Martyniak and Karolina Włodek, Arek Pasożyt and Michał Mioduszewski, Kamila Wolszczak and Marcin Zalewski have been cooperating with the inhabitants of Poznań since February. The construction site on Święty Marcin street will become an exhibition about urban avant-garde with guided tours organised by the Museum Travel Agency. Just like in the previous years we will organise Poznań Yard Sale, and climb the tops of the city’s highest buildings as a part of the Crown of Poznań project. During Dinner at Marcin’s we will meet with collectives and galleries who have their headquarters in the vicinity of the reconstruction, and in the course of the Human Mic debates we will talk about the problems encountered by newcomers.

The festival events will be accompanied by film screenings created in cooperation with Studio Munka and Docs Against Gravity. There will also be a dance program: Old Brewery New Dance on Malta, the curator of which is Joanna Leśnierowska as well as the review of the most important projects from the repertoire of Poznań theatres: Teatr Polski, Teatr Nowy, Polski Teatr Tańca, Scena Robocza, Republiki Sztuki Tłusta Langusta and Stowarzyszene Teatralne Antrakt.

The festival’s launch will be as spectacular as its finale. We invite you to the finale concert entitled Konieczny…? Koniecznie! In the beautiful setting of the Henryk Wieniawski Park we will hear the legendary compositions by Zygmunt Konieczny reinterpreted for the orchestra by Cezary Duchnowski, Agata Zubel, Andrzej Bauer and Bartłomiej Wąsik. The Collegium F Orchestra will be conducted by Marcin Sompoliński.
