Jessica Stockholder: Stuff Matters – Centraal Museum, Utrecht (NL) – 19 Apri 2019 – 01 September 2019.

Cet été, Jessica Stockholder (1959) reprend le Centraal Museum. Laissez-vous surprendre par ses sculptures et installations exubérantes. Ce n’est pas pour rien que l’historienne de l’art Miwon Kwon a qualifié son travail de « désordonné et funky, presque hors de contrôle ».

Parallèlement à ses installation, Jessica Stockholder a choisi quelques oeuvres du musée dans l’immense collection. « J’ai choisi des objets de la collection du musée qui résonnent dans mon travail. Dans un certain sens, j’ai traité la collection comme l’un de mes matériaux, en recherchant comment la signification de chaque travail change en fonction de la contexte. »

Sa sélection des trésors du dépôt est maintenant visible dans le hall. L’un des plus grands trésors qu’elle a trouvé est la vague de Gustave Courbet.

Jessica Stockholder déclare à propos du travail de Courbet: «J’aime la couleur. C’est un phénomène physique qui peut provoquer des réactions très sensuelles et intenses. Pour cette exposition, nous avons choisi d’utiliser des couleurs sur le mur pour définir les différentes parties de l’exposition. Pour mon choix de couleur, je me suis inspiré des différentes nuances de vert de la vague et du rose orangé des parties nuageuses. »

Jessica Stockholder’s upcoming solo show Stuff Matters at Centraal Museum, Utrecht. In this exhibition, Stockholder acts as both artist and curator. In addition to presenting a retrospective of her oeuvre, Centraal Museum has also invited Stockholder to incorporate pieces from their vast collection of artworks, objects, and artifacts. As Stockholder explains: « I have selected items from the collection that resonate with my own work. In a certain sense I treated the collection as one of my materials, and have investigated how the meaning of each work changes depending on the context. » The exhibition Jessica Stockholder: Stuff Matters will run from April 19 to September 1st, 2019.

On the occasion of the exhibition, Stockholder has also made a public art intervention, installing a new Assist sculpture to connect De Menselijke Ontmoeting (The Human Encounter) by Paul Kingma with Hans Wimmer’s Groot Gezadeld Paard (Large Saddled Horse). The resulting work, Assist: Rider (pictured above), is now on view in the new sculpture garden on Croeselaan in Utrecht. Furthermore, ahead of the exhibition’s opening, De Ateliers in Amsterdam will host an artist’s talk by Jessica Stockholder, moderated by Monika Szewczyk, newly appointed director of De Appel, at 5pm today.

In her work, Stockholder combines all sorts of everyday items – ranging from umbrellas and cushions to furniture and lamps – to form an overwhelming composition. Through her playful manipulation of form and color, she is able to transform the entire environment her sculptures and installations reside in. With her open-minded approach to the world, Stockholder aims to disrupt our usual view of the items and materials that surround us daily, and to subvert our notions regarding what is worthwhile and what is worthless.
