George Condo – rétrospective au Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris – jusqu’au 15 février 2026.

Le musée d’Art Moderne de Paris présente une vaste exposition dédiée à George Condo, artiste américain né en 1957. Après avoir débuté sa carrière à New York aux côtés d’Andy Warhol, il s’établit en Europe où il développe une vision singulière de la peinture figurative, nourrie par sa profonde connaissance de l’histoire de l’art.

Cette exposition au MAM constitue le troisième volet d’une trilogie consacrée aux créateurs new-yorkais des années 1980, après Basquiat et Haring. Elle rassemble environ 80 toiles, 110 œuvres sur papier et une vingtaine de sculptures provenant de prestigieuses institutions internationales et de collections particulières.

Le parcours s’articule autour de trois thématiques non chronologiques. D’abord, le dialogue avec les maîtres anciens : Condo réinterprète librement Rembrandt, Goya ou Picasso, créant des compositions troublantes qui mêlent références classiques et imagerie contemporaine souvent effrayante. Son concept de « Réalisme artificiel » brouille délibérément les repères temporels. Ensuite, l’exposition explore sa représentation de la figure humaine à travers des portraits d’êtres imaginaires qu’il nomme « humanoïdes ». Sa notion de « cubisme psychologique » lui permet d’exprimer simultanément plusieurs états émotionnels contradictoires dans une même physionomie. Certains portraits sont incroyablement complexes. Enfin, le rapport à l’abstraction révèle une facette méconnue de son travail, notamment à travers ses séries monochromes (bleu, noir et blanc).

L’ensemble des oeuvres présentées témoigne d’une recherche incessante de l’artiste et d’une capacité remarquable à renouveler son expression plastique.

The Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris (MAM) presents a major exhibition dedicated to George Condo, an American artist born in 1957. After beginning his career in New York alongside Andy Warhol, he settled in Europe where he developed a unique vision of figurative painting, informed by his profound knowledge of art history.

This exhibition at the MAM is the third installment in a trilogy devoted to New York artists of the 1980s, following Basquiat and Haring. It brings together approximately 80 paintings, 110 works on paper, and some 20 sculptures from prestigious international institutions and private collections.

The exhibition is structured around three non-chronological themes. First, the dialogue with the Old Masters: Condo freely reinterprets Rembrandt, Goya, and Picasso, creating unsettling compositions that blend classical references with often frightening contemporary imagery. His concept of « Artificial Realism » deliberately blurs temporal markers. Second, the exhibition explores his representation of the human figure through portraits of imaginary beings he calls « humanoids. » His notion of « psychological cubism » allows him to simultaneously express several contradictory emotional states within a single physiognomy. Some portraits are incredibly complex. Finally, the relationship to abstraction reveals a little-known facet of his work, particularly through his monochrome series (blue, black, and white).

The works presented as a whole testify to the artist’s incessant research and remarkable ability to renew his artistic expression.
