Le Wiener Festwochen 2026 ouvre ses portes ce 15 mai. Dirigé par Milo Rau depuis 2024, le festival est un moment précieux dans l’été des festivals européens. L’un des plus grands et meilleurs festivals du spectacle contemporain au monde a élaboré, comme chaque année, un programme foisonnant, riche d’une profusion d’artistes internationaux parmi les plus prestigieux; mais également d’une multitude de projets de jeunes artistes, à découvrir sans modération…

Une saison étonnante où se croiseront Romeo Castellucci, Angélica Liddell, Robert Wilson, Florentina Holzinger, Patti Smith, Bashar Murkus, Philippe Quesne, Milo Rau, Marta Gornika, Davi Pontes, Kuro Tanino, entre autres plaisirs… Le festival fait le tour de la création européenne et mondiale la plus actuelle, des grands noms à l’affiche oui, mais beaucoup de jeunes artistes également qui constituent toute la pertinence de ce festival ouvert au monde qui avance…

Avec « La République des arts », la démocratie au coeur du projet curatorial de Milo Rau :

Le Festival de Vienne (Wiener Festwochen) est l’un des plus importants festivals d’art et de culture d’Europe ; il alimente le débat culturel mondial contemporain et commande ou coproduit des œuvres. Théâtre, musique, opéra et performances y sont présentés, et les questions sociopolitiques y sont abordées de manière créative pendant cinq semaines en mai et juin de chaque année. L’arrivée de Milo Rau à la direction artistique en 2024 a initié une refonte radicale du festival, avec la participation des citoyens. La République libre de Vienne a été proclamée devant 40 000 visiteurs lors de l’ouverture du Festival de Vienne (Wiener Festwochen) de cette année-là.

Art politique radical, grandes icônes du théâtre, débats enflammés et fêtes débridées – les nouvelles institutions révolutionnaires, dont un hymne et un drapeau, ont provoqué une agitation majeure, depuis les très médiatisés 
procès de Vienne en passant par l’ Académie du Second Modernisme et le Conseil de la République jusqu’à l’institution d’un centre permanent de festivals, la Maison de la République et le Club de la République.

Lorsque le Festival de Vienne (Wiener Festwochen) | République libre de Vienne a adopté la Déclaration de Vienne , il est devenu le premier festival au monde à se doter d’une constitution définissant des règles relatives aux quotas, à l’organisation démocratique de la programmation et aux normes éthiques et écologiques. Élaborée par le Conseil de la République, un organe composé de quatre-vingts Viennois et d’invités internationaux, cette déclaration établit les orientations du « festival de demain » – la transformation du Festival de Vienne (Wiener Festwochen). Quel est l’art de notre temps ? Comment un festival peut-il concrétiser radicalement ses objectifs sociopolitiques ?

The Vienna Festival 2026 opens its doors on May 15th. Directed by Milo Rau since 2024, the festival is a precious highlight of the European festival calendar. One of the world’s largest and finest contemporary performing arts festivals has, as every year, put together a rich and varied program, featuring a wealth of prestigious international artists, as well as a multitude of projects by emerging artists ,  all waiting to be discovered.

An amazing season featuring  Romeo Castellucci, Angelica Liddell, Robert Wilson, Florentina Holzinger, Patti Smith, Bashar Murkus, Philippe Quesne, Milo Rau, Marta Gornika, Davi Pontes, Kuro Tanino , and many other delights… The festival showcases the latest European and international creations, featuring big names, yes, but also many young artists who embody the very essence of this festival, open to a world that is constantly evolving…

With « The Republic of the Arts, » democracy is at the heart of Milo Rau’s curatorial project:

The Vienna Festival (Wiener Festwochen) is one of Europe’s most important arts and culture festivals; it fuels contemporary global cultural debate and commissions or co-produces works. Theater, music, opera, and performance art are presented, and socio-political issues are addressed creatively for five weeks in May and June each year. The arrival of Milo Rau as artistic director in 2024 initiated a radical overhaul of the festival, with citizen participation. The Free Republic of Vienna was proclaimed before 40,000 visitors at the opening of that year’s Vienna Festival (Wiener Festwochen).

Radical political art, great icons of the theatre, fiery debates and unrestrained parties – the new revolutionary institutions, including an anthem and a flag, caused major unrest, from the highly publicized 
Vienna Trials  through the  Academy of Second Modernism  and the  Council of the Republic  to the establishment of a permanent festival centre, the  House of the Republic  and the  Club of the Republic.

When the Vienna Festival (Wiener Festwochen) | Free Republic of Vienna adopted the  Vienna Declaration,  it became the first festival in the world to have a constitution defining rules regarding quotas, the democratic organization of programming, and ethical and ecological standards. Drafted by the Council of the Republic, a body composed of eighty Viennese and international guests, this declaration establishes the guidelines for the « festival of tomorrow »—the transformation of the Vienna Festival (Wiener Festwochen). What is art in our time? How can a festival radically realize its socio-political goals?
