L’artiste américaine donne «Sonic Prayer», une performance conçue avec le collectif Soundwalk pour l’inauguration du Pavillon du Saint-Siège à la 61e Biennale d’art de Venise. L’événement, qui se tient dans la Chiesa degli Scalzi, s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet «L’oreille est l’œil de l’âme», inspiré par sainte Hildegarde de Bingen et dédié à la contemplation, au silence et à la redécouverte de l’écoute.

Une prière sonore confiée à la voix inimitable de Patti Smith a inauguré le Pavillon du Saint-Siège lors de la 61e Exposition internationale d’art de la Biennale de Venise. Ce vendredi 8 mai, dans l’église Santa Maria di Nazareth, dite église des Scalzi, l’artiste américaine a interprété Sonic Prayer, une performance créée en collaboration avec le collectif Soundwalk, partenaire central du projet d’exposition porté par le Dicastère pour la Culture et l’Éducation.

Cet événement représente le premier événement public du Pavillon du Saint-Siège, intitulé «L’oreille est l’œil de l’âme», qui accompagnera les visiteurs de la Biennale du 9 mai au 22 novembre 2026 dans un voyage immersif dédié à l’écoute comme expérience artistique, spirituelle et humaine.

Sur les traces d’Hildegarde

Ce projet s’inspire de la figure de sainte Hildegarde de Bingen, mystique, musicienne, théologienne et docteure de l’Église, dont la vision du son comme voie vers la connaissance et l’harmonie intérieure constitue le cœur conceptuel de l’ensemble du projet. C’est précisément pour cette raison que Patti Smith, artiste qui a toujours entremêlé poésie, musique et exploration spirituelle, a été choisie.

«Pour Hildegarde, le son était un chemin de connaissance, un lien entre l’âme et le monde. L’œuvre de Patti Smith a toujours puisé dans cette même inspiration», expliquent les commissaires d’exposition Hans Ulrich Obrist et Ben Vickers. «C’est une rencontre intime, la première écoute d’un Pavillon qui s’ouvrira à bien d’autres découvertes. Nous n’aurions pu choisir aucune autre voix pour l’inaugurer.»

Pour ce spectacle, Patti Smith a été rejointe par Stephan Crasneanscki, Simone Merli, Diego Espinosa Cruz González et Pedro Maia, dans un mélange de voix, d’électronique, de percussions et d’images pour une expérience immersive à mi-chemin entre concert, méditation et installation sonore.

Deux lieux et une invitation à ralentir

Le Pavillon du Saint-Siège s’étend sur deux lieux vénitiens complémentaires. Le premier est le Giardino Mistico dei Carmelitani Scalzi , dans le quartier de Cannaregio. Cet espace, habituellement fermé au public, a été transformé en une expérience sonore immersive grâce aux contributions d’artistes internationaux tels que Patti Smith, Brian Eno, Meredith Monk et Jim Jarmusch, dont les œuvres explorent les sons naturels du site.

Le second lieu est le complexe Santa Maria Ausiliatrice, dans le quartier de Castello, déjà au cœur du projet du Vatican pour la Biennale d’architecture de 2025. Ici prend forme un «scriptorium contemporain», comprenant des installations, des archives vivantes et des œuvres dédiées à l’héritage spirituel et culturel d’Hildegarde. Le commissaire du pavillon est le cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, préfet du dicastère pour la Culture et l’Éducation. Les commissaires d’exposition sont Hans Ulrich Obrist et Ben Vickers.

Ce projet est né d’une réponse culturelle et spirituelle à une époque marquée par l’accélération, le bruit et la fragmentation. Le cardinal de Mendonça l’a lui-même souligné lors de la présentation du Pavillon, expliquant que l’art peut devenir un lieu de contemplation et générer rencontre, paix et futur.

The American artist presents « Sonic Prayer, » a performance conceived with the Soundwalk collective for the inauguration of the Holy See Pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale. The event, held in the Chiesa degli Scalzi, is part of the project « The Ear Is the Eye of the Soul, » inspired by Saint Hildegard of Bingen and dedicated to contemplation, silence, and the rediscovery of listening.

A sonic prayer entrusted to the inimitable voice of Patti Smith inaugurated the Holy See Pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition. This Friday, May 8, in the Church of Santa Maria di Nazareth, also known as the Church of the Scalzi, the American artist performed  Sonic Prayer , a performance created in collaboration with the Soundwalk collective, a key partner in the exhibition project led by the Dicastery for Culture and Education.

This event represents the first public event of the Holy See Pavilion, entitled « The ear is the eye of the soul », which will accompany visitors to the Biennale from May 9 to November 22, 2026 on an immersive journey dedicated to listening as an artistic, spiritual and human experience.

Following in Hildegard’s footsteps

This project draws inspiration from Saint Hildegard of Bingen, mystic, musician, theologian, and Doctor of the Church, whose vision of sound as a path to knowledge and inner harmony forms the conceptual heart of the entire project. It is precisely for this reason that Patti Smith, an artist who has always intertwined poetry, music, and spiritual exploration, was chosen.

“For Hildegard, sound was a path to knowledge, a link between the soul and the world. Patti Smith’s work has always drawn from this same inspiration,”  explain exhibition curators Hans Ulrich Obrist and Ben Vickers.  “This is an intimate encounter, the first listening experience in a Pavilion that will open itself to many more discoveries. We could not have chosen any other voice to inaugurate it.”

For this show, Patti Smith was joined by Stephan Crasneanscki, Simone Merli, Diego Espinosa Cruz González and Pedro Maia, in a mix of voice, electronics, percussion and images for an immersive experience halfway between concert, meditation and sound installation.

Two places and an invitation to slow down

The Holy See Pavilion spans two complementary Venetian locations. The first is the Giardino Mistico dei Carmelitani Scalzi, in the Cannaregio district. This space, usually closed to the public, has been transformed into an immersive sound experience through the contributions of international artists such as Patti Smith, Brian Eno, Meredith Monk, and Jim Jarmusch, whose works explore the site’s natural sounds.

The second venue is the Santa Maria Ausiliatrice complex in the Castello district, already central to the Vatican’s project for the 2025 Architecture Biennale. Here, a  « contemporary scriptorium » is taking shape,  comprising installations, living archives, and works dedicated to Hildegard’s spiritual and cultural legacy. The pavilion’s curator is Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education. The exhibition curators are Hans Ulrich Obrist and Ben Vickers.

This project arose from a cultural and spiritual response to an era marked by acceleration, noise, and fragmentation. Cardinal de Mendonça himself emphasized this during the Pavilion’s presentation, explaining that art can become a place of contemplation and generate encounter, peace, and a future.
