« ACADEMY OF TAL R »., MUSEUM BOIJMANS VAN BEUNINGEN, ROTTERDAM

Academy of Tal R – Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen – 14 October 2017 – 14 January 2018 – Museumpark 18-20, Rotterdam – The Netherlands.

From 14 October 2017 until 14 January 2018, the major exhibition rooms of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen will be filled with the impressive work of Tal R (Tal Shlomo Rozenzweig, b. 1967). Academy of Tal R surveys the Danish artist’s career from the past 20 years and presents new works specifically created for the exhibition, with a total of roughly 120 works from private and institutional collections across Europe and the United States. The most substantial exhibition of works by the multi-disciplinary artist mounted to date, Academy of Tal R is the result of a collaboration between Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark. The exhibition is on view in Denmark until 10 September 2017, after which the works will travel to the Netherlands.

Initially known for his flamboyant, colourful paintings featuring exuberant imagery, Tal R’s oeuvre today consists of works in drawing, print, textile, sculpture and furniture. The artist’s early paintings demonstrate profound understanding of painterly tradition while giving the impression of simplicity. Art historical references abound: Dadaism, Expressionsim, Fauvism, and nods to traditional Scandinavian art, Art Nouveau and outsider art run throughout the works. His more recent paintings see an evolution in his methodology, both compositionally and in the application of paint. In addition to his paintings, Tal R is well known for his unique, hand-made sofas, or ‘opiumbeds’, made a from old and new rugs sourced throughout Scandinavia then treated in the artist’s studio in Copenhagen.

Tal R refrains from a single aesthetic style: often using the Hebrew word ‘kolbojnik’ to desribe his practice of sourcing and combining a distinctive range of imagery from high and low culture across genres, he plays with the permeable boundary between art and life. Since the early days of his career, Tal R has been a storyteller, continuously interested in the different lives of subjects often overlooked or marginalised in modern society. With his multifaceted oeuvre Tal R draws our attention to what we’re seeing and where its meaning may lie.

Academy of Tal R invites visitors to Tal R’s unique world. The welcoming and energetic nature of the artist’s studio in Copenhagen — at times a place of quiet and reflection, at others home to assistants, family, friends and pets — will be recreated at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Its special ambience has inspired the exhibition design and a programme of public activities taking place both inside and outside the galleries, bringing the enormous power of Tal R to Rotterdam.
