Cet été, le MO.CO. offre ses espaces à la grande artiste américaine Kiki Smith. Après avoir accueilli d’autres figures féminines majeures de l’art contemporain telles que Berlinde De Bruyckere, Huma Bhabha et Françoise Pétrovitch, l’institution célèbre une création aux pratiques diverses, centrée autour de la question de l’être au monde – corps social, spirituel, animal et céleste.

Kiki Smith, artiste américaine née en Allemagne en 1954, développe depuis les années 1980 une pratique multidisciplinaire, mêlant sculptures, gravures, photographies, dessins, livres, tapisseries et objets divers. L’une des caractéristiques de ses œuvres est l’expérimentation par la diversité et le refus de toute forme de hiérarchie. Un sujet central reste le corps humain, souvent féminin, son anatomie, son empreinte, sa relation au vivant. Parfois inquiétant, altéré ou fragmenté, il apparaît aussi apaisé, rassembleur et point de rencontre d’énergies.

L’exposition, conçue en étroite collaboration avec l’artiste, rassemble plus d’une centaine d’œuvres, couvrant une grande diversité de mediums et techniques, sur plus d’une quarantaine d’années de production. Elle explorera, sur la totalité des espaces qui s’étendent sur près de 1500 m2 répartis sur trois étages, la mise en relation des différents aspects de son travail à travers un récit centré sur le corps. À la fois ensemble complexe d’organes, maintenus ensemble sous la peau, il est également le signe de notre identité sociale, habillé et accessoirisé. Il constitue aussi le siège de notre animalité, de notre lien avec la nature et d’une spiritualité diffuse.

This summer, MO.CO. is offering its spaces to the great American artist Kiki Smith. After hosting other major female figures in contemporary art such as Berlinde De Bruyckere, Huma Bhabha and Françoise Pétrovitch, the institution is celebrating a body of work with diverse practices, centered around the question of being in the world – social, spiritual, animal and celestial body.

Kiki Smith, an American artist born in Germany in 1954, has been developing a multidisciplinary practice since the 1980s, blending sculptures, prints, photographs, drawings, books, tapestries, and various objects. One of the characteristics of her work is experimentation through diversity and a rejection of any form of hierarchy. A central theme remains the human body, often female, its anatomy, its imprint, and its relationship to life. Sometimes unsettling, altered, or fragmented, it also appears serene, unifying, and a meeting point of energies.

The exhibition, conceived in close collaboration with the artist, brings together over one hundred works, covering a wide variety of media and techniques, spanning more than forty years of production. Across the entirety of the spaces, which extend over nearly 1,500 square meters spread across three floors, it will explore the interconnectedness of the different aspects of his work through a narrative centered on the body. At once a complex collection of organs held together beneath the skin, the body is also the sign of our social identity, clothed and accessorized. It also constitutes the seat of our animality, our connection with nature, and a diffuse spirituality.
