« Passer d’un rêve à l’autre / To pass from one dream to another », titre principal de la 18e édition de la Biennale d’art contemporain, s’inspire des traboules — ces passages singuliers qui traversent cours et immeubles lyonnais — pour interroger la manière dont on passe d’une perception à une autre, d’un rêve collectif à un autre. Lyon, ville carrefour du commerce et de l’industrie, devient le point de départ d’une réflexion sur l’économie, ici entendue comme l’ensemble des processus par lesquels des êtres interdépendants acquièrent, transforment et font circuler ce qui soutient leurs existences.

S’appuyant sur les écrits de Walter Benjamin et les Principes d’économie poétique de Robert Filliou, Catherine Nichols conçoit un projet situé entre critique et invention. Là où Benjamin montre comment le capitalisme produit un rêve collectif dont il s’agit d’interrompre la continuité, Filliou propose d’expérimenter d’autres formes d’économie à travers des pratiques artistiques et sociales. La Biennale de Lyon s’attache ainsi à ces moments où l’évidence du présent se fragilise et où d’autres imaginaires deviennent possibles.

Déployé sur plusieurs sites emblématiques de Lyon, le parcours articule des dimensions entrelacées : l’industriel aux Grandes Locos, le relationnel au Musée des Tissus et des Arts décoratifs, et l’existentiel au macLYON. L’économie y est envisagée au-delà de sa dimension monétaire : elle inclut les formes d’attention, de soin, de relation et d’imagination qui structurent la vie collective.

Conçue comme un passage, la Biennale invite à parcourir la ville autrement et à expérimenter d’autres manières de faire et de penser l’économie.

18th Lyon Biennial Contemporary Art – To pass from one dream to another – Guest curator: Catherine Nichols – Diverse locations, Lyon – 19 september – 13 décember, 2026.

“To pass from one dream to another,” the main title of the 18th edition of the Biennale of Contemporary Art draws on the traboules—those distinctive passageways running through Lyon’s courtyards and buildings—to explore how one moves from one mode of perception to another, from one collective dream to another. Lyon, a crossroads of trade and industry, becomes the starting point for a reflection on the economy, approached here as the set of processes through which interdependent beings acquire, transform, and circulate what sustains their existence.

Drawing on the writings of Walter Benjamin and Robert Filliou’s Principes d’économie poétique, Catherine Nichols develops a project situated between critique and invention. While Benjamin reveals how capitalism produces a collective dream whose continuity must be interrupted, Filliou proposes that other forms of economy can be explored through artistic and social practices. The Biennale focuses on those moments when the apparent stability of the present begins to fracture, and other imaginaries become possible.

Spread across several emblematic sites in Lyon, the exhibition unfolds through interwoven dimensions: the industrial at the Grandes Locos, the relational at the Musée des Tissus, and the existential at macLYON. Here, the economy extends beyond the monetary to encompass forms of attention, care, relationships, and imagination that structure collective life.

Conceived as a passage, the Biennale invites visitors to move through the city differently and to experiment with alternative ways of making and thinking about the economy.
