From 23 November 2013 to 23 February 2014 the Mücsarnok/Kunsthalle Budapest Budapest will show a selection of contemporary video art from the Julia Stoschek Collection, Duesseldorf.
In considering the urban space, the environment that results from human intervention, as a system, the variable that characterizes its degree of disorder – the entropy of the city – is also determinable. Entropy as a central motif of the exhibition is based on the writings and comments of the artist Robert Smithson, who is also shown in the exhibition and used the term, originally taken from thermodynamics, as a basic interest in his artistic practise.
The selection of artworks from world renowned artists explores the city and the built environment, as well as the often conflict-ridden and paradoxical relationship of society to these environments.
All in all, 26 works are displayed from Francis Alÿs, Lonnie van Brummelen, Cao Fei, Cyprien Gaillard, Klara Lidén, Helen Marten, Gordon Matta-Clark, Robert Smithson, Clemens von Wedemeyer, Andro Wekua and Tobias Zielony.
The Julia Stoschek Collection is a private collection of contemporary artwork with its primary focus on time-based media. Each year, new works are selected from the collection and put on view in the exhibition space at its location, in Duesseldorf, as well as at outside venues. After the Mücsarnok exhibition, parts of the collection will be presented at the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM), in Karlsruhe.
