WESTERN FLAG (NFT) : John Gerrard réalise une oeuvre NFT pour un cryptofonds pour le climat et la régénération des sols.

L’artiste irlandais des nouveaux médias John Gerrard (né en 1974, N. Tipperary, Irlande) a publié sa toute première oeuvre NFT* le 20 mars dernier à 18 heures EDT / 11 heures CET sur la plateforme « Foundation ».

Certifié par Verisart, Western Flag (NFT) est une séquence unique de 1,8k x 1,8k dérivée de la simulation solaire de Gerrard, Western Flag (Spindletop, Texas) 2017, une œuvre d’art qui a été commandée pour la Journée de la Terre 2017 par Channel4, au Royaume-Uni, en tant que hack TV. L’œuvre d’art a ensuite été partagée dans le monde entier sous forme de clips numériques et d’images fixes, et est devenue une icône de la protestation contre le changement climatique.

Le projet de Gerrard vise à créer une vente NFT entièrement éthique et radicalement transparente, qui reprend la philosophie de la Blockchain. Il s’agit donc du premier NFT « superneutre » sur le marché.

50 % du produit en ethereum de la vente Western Flag (NFT) sera transféré à regenerate.farm / iridescent.eth, un cryptofonds d’urgence dédié à la restauration des sols et aux pratiques agricoles post-pétrolières en Irlande. regenerate.farm, qui est à la fois le titre du fonds et son nom de domaine, a été fondé par Gerrard en mars 2021. Il existe en dialogue et en partenariat avec un collectif de créateurs : artistes, agriculteurs, penseurs, organisateurs et familles, qui veilleront à ce que l’ethereum soit transféré directement et de manière transparente aux agriculteurs et organisations biologiques et régénératrices. Il sera utilisé pour les efforts d’inversion du carbone qui éliminent les produits pétrochimiques et les engrais azotés du sol et « aspirent » le dioxyde de carbone dans le sol. Ces pratiques sont connues sous le nom de séquestration du carbone, par opposition à la compensation du carbone, qui n’a aucun impact réel sur l’inversion du changement climatique.

La consommation d’énergie associée à la vente aux enchères sera suivie par le site Web Carbon.FYI, qui créera un registre en temps réel de l’empreinte carbone du projet. L’Ethereum sera donné à regenerate.farm pour compenser cette utilisation à un taux de 0,1 eth par tonne de dioxyde de carbone, soit environ 16 fois les taux industriels standard, ce qui rend le projet « superneutre ». Gerrard compensera également le minage d’ethereum généré par l’acheteur de l’œuvre lors de sa transaction en faisant don de l’équivalent en ethereum au cryptofonds agricole à partir des recettes de l’artiste.

Western Flag (NFT) est frappé et sera listé sur Foundation à partir de 18 heures EST le samedi 20 mars. Une vente aux enchères de 24 heures sera lancée lorsque la réserve de 250 ETH sera atteinte. Le NFT singulier augmente l’édition logicielle existante de Western Flag (Spindletop, Texas) 2017, qui existe comme une édition de 5 plus 2 AP.

John Gerrard to Release NFT in Support of Cryptofund for Climate and Soil Regeneration

Irish new media artist John Gerrard (b. 1974, N. Tipperary, Ireland) had released his first ever NFT on 20 March 2021, at 6 PM EDT / 11 PM CET on the « Foundation » platform.

Certified by Verisart, Western Flag (NFT) is a unique 1.8k x 1.8k sequence derived from Gerrard’s solar simulation, Western Flag (Spindletop, Texas) 2017, an artwork that was commissioned for Earth Day 2017 by Channel4, UK as a TV hack. The artwork was subsequently shared worldwide in the form of digital clips and stills, and became an icon of climate change protest.

Gerrard’s project aims to create an entirely ethical and radically transparent NFT sale, which captures the philosophy of the Blockchain. This will be the first “superneutral” NFT in the marketplace.
50% of ethereum proceeds from the Western Flag (NFT) sale will be transferred to regenerate.farm / iridescent.eth, an emergency cryptofund dedicated to soil restoration and post petroleum agricultural practices in Ireland. regenerate.farm, which is both the title of the fund and its domain name, was founded by Gerrard in March 2021. It exists in dialogue and partnership with a collective of creators: artists, farmers, thinkers, organizers, and families, who will ensure that the ethereum is transferred directly and transparently to biological and regenerative farmers and organizations. It will be used for carbon reversal efforts that remove petrochemicals and nitrogen fertilizer from soil and “draw down” carbon dioxide into the ground. These practices are known as carbon sequestration as opposed to carbon offsetting, which has no real impact on reversing climate change.

The energy usage associated with the auction will be tracked by the website, Carbon.FYI, which will create a real-time record of the project’s carbon footprint. Ethereum will be donated to regenerate.farm to offset this usage at a rate of 0.1 eth per tonne of carbon dioxide, or approximately 16 times standard industrial rates, making it “superneutral”. Gerrard will also be compensating for the ethereum mining generated by the purchaser of the work during their transaction by donating the equivalent ethereum to the farming cryptofund from the artist’s proceeds.

Western Flag (NFT) is minted and will be listed on Foundation from 6 PM EST on Saturday, March 20. A 24-hour auction will be initiated when the reserve of 250 ETH is met. The singular NFT augments the existing software edition of Western Flag (Spindletop, Texas) 2017, which exists as an edition of 5 plus 2 AP.
This project returns Western Flag to the digital community that made it famous. As part of the NFT project, a video file of the work can be freely downloaded as public art from regenerate.farm/NFT.

Gerrard is considered a pioneer of simulation within contemporary art. His annual softwares are in the collections of MoMA, Tate, SFMoMA, LACMA, Pinault Collection, Ullens Foundation, M+, Pinakothek der Moderne, and TBA21, among others. Recent projects include Mirror Pavilion, originally commissioned for Galway International Arts Festival 2020 to include screenings of Corn Work and Leaf Work.
