VENEZIA BIENNALE DANZA 2021: FIRST SENSE – 23 july – 1 august 2021, Venice.

FIRST SENSE

Pour sa première année en tant que directeur du département de la danse, Wayne McGregor présente, à l’occasion du 15e festival international de danse contemporaine intitulé First Sense (23 juillet > ; 1er août), la complexité, l’ampleur, la « transformabilité » d’une discipline qui se nourrit de renouveau, dans son dialogue avec la pensée la plus avant-gardiste.

Le programme de la Biennale Danza 2021 comprend des spectacles en direct avec des chorégraphes et des compagnies du monde entier, des installations multilingues, la nouvelle énergie du Biennale College Danza, la riche production de films sur la danse, la collaboration avec la Biennale Architettura, les conversations avec les artistes et les commandes de nouvelle danse.

Dix jours d’événements avec plus de 100 artistes, tous des premières italiennes, deux premières mondiales et une première européenne. « Alors que nous sommes propulsés en 2021, après une année marquée par la pandémie, la distanciation sociale et les restrictions physiques imposées », a fait remarquer le directeur Wayne McGregor, « le caractère essentiel du toucher dans nos vies nous est puissamment rappelé. En effet, le toucher a pris de nouvelles résonances dans notre société en général et sur le plan personnel, car ce sens fondamental que nous considérons habituellement comme acquis a été remis en question et compromis. Nous avons été incapables de serrer nos proches dans nos bras ou de sentir l’étreinte de nos amis, nous avons manqué les puissantes relations interpersonnelles engendrées par le contact peau à peau et nous avons ressenti très profondément la perte profonde de notre bien-être physique, mental et émotionnel qu’entraîne la privation du toucher.

Aujourd’hui, nous avons désespérément besoin de nous reconnecter au monde à travers et avec notre corps et nous sommes, plus que jamais, prêts à être exaltés par un retour à notre existence corporelle la plus complète ».

LES LION 2021 POUR LA DANSE

LION D’OR  : le prix a été attribué à la danseuse et chorégraphe franco-sénégalaise Germaine Acogny.
Germaine Acogny « est une artiste de la grande qualité et d’une intégrité absolue » – comme l’indique la motivation du prix. « Sa contribution à la formation des jeunes au spectacle et à la chorégraphie, ainsi que la large diffusion de son travail dans son pays et dans le monde, ont fait d’elle une force individuelle majeure dans le développement de notre forme d’art. Acogny croit au pouvoir de la danse pour changer les vies et s’est engagée à partager sa passion comme un acte de transformation et de régénération ». À la Biennale Danza Germaine Acogny présentera son œuvre Somewhere at the Beginning (23 juillet, 21 h, Arsenale, Teatro alle Tese).
LION D’ARGENT : le prix a été attribué à la danseuse et chorégraphe nord-irlandaise Oona Doherty.
« Les intérêts, les passions et les instincts singuliers de Doherty – a commenté McGregor – ne se sont jamais accordés avec le monde de la danse établi. Inspirée par la culture des clubs et la danse « informelle », Doherty a affiné son art par essais et erreurs, son approche étant peu orthodoxe, créative, brute et courageuse. Ce qui est significatif dans son travail, c’est qu’il touche et parle à de nombreuses personnes qui ne viendraient normalement pas au théâtre. Ses danses dépassent les frontières et les catégories démographiques et s’adressent directement au cœur. Elle a un don exceptionnel pour travailler avec des non-danseurs et des communautés locales, les intégrant souvent dans ses productions en tournée avec beaucoup de perspicacité et d’humanité. Ce prix rappellera au monde qu’il n’y a pas qu’une seule façon de devenir un grand artiste. L’art est en vous et il en sortira toujours ».
À la Biennale, Danza Oona Doherty présentera sa pièce Hard To Be Soft. A Belfast Prayer (30 juillet, 20 h, Teatro Piccolo Arsenale ; reprise le 31 juillet, 18 h).

In his first year as director of the Dance Department, Wayne McGregor presents at the 15th International Festival of Contemporary Dance titled First Sense (23 July > 1 August) the complexity, the breadth, the “transformability” of a discipline that thrives on renewal, in its dialogue with the most cutting-edge thinking.

The programme of the Biennale Danza 2021 includes live performances with choreographers and companies from around the world, the multilingual installations, the new energy of the Biennale College Danza, the rich production of films about and featuring Dance, the collaboration with the Biennale Architettura, the conversations with the artists and the commissions for new dance.

10 days of events with over 100 artists, all Italian premieres, two world premieres and one European premiere.
“As we are propelled into 2021, after a year of the pandemic, social distancing and enforced physical restrictions” – Director Wayne McGregor has remarked – “we are powerfully reminded of the criticality of touch in our lives. Indeed, touch has taken on new resonances in our society at large and most personally as this fundamental sense we usually take for granted has been challenged and compromised. We have been unable to hold our loved ones nor reach out to feel our friends embrace, we have missed the powerful interpersonal relationships that are engendered by skin-to-skin contact and have registered most deeply the profound loss to our physical, mental and emotional well-being such touch-deprivation opens in us.

Today, we are desperate to re-connect to the world through and with our bodies and we are, now more than ever, ready to be exhilarated by a return to our fullest embodied existence”.

THE 2021 LION AWARDS FOR DANCE

GOLDEN LION FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT: the award has been attributed to Senegalese-French dancer and choreographer Germaine Acogny.
Germaine Acogny “is an artist of the highest quality and integrity” – as the motivation for the award states. “Her contribution to the training of young people in performance and choreography alongside the wide dissemination of her work in her country and in the world has made her a major individual force in the development of our art form. Acogny believes in the power of dance to change lives and has been committed to sharing her passion as an act of transformation and regeneration”.
At the Biennale Danza Germaine Acogny will present her work « Somewhere at the Beginning » (23 July, 9 pm, Arsenale, Teatro alle Tese).
SILVER LION: the award has been attributed to Northern-Irish dancer and choreographer Oona Doherty.
“Doherty’s interests, passions and singular outlier instincts” – McGregor has commented – “have never gelled with the establishment dance world. Inspired by club culture and ‘informal’ dancing Doherty has refined her craft through trial and error, her approach unorthodox, creative, raw and brave. What is significant about her work is how it reaches out and speaks to many who would not normally come to the theatre. Her dances communicate across boundaries and demographics in arrows straight to the heart. She has an exceptional gift in working with non – dancers and local communities, often integrating them into her touring productions with great insight and humanity. This award will remind the world that there is no one way to become a great artist. Art sits within you and will always out”.
At the Biennale Danza Oona Doherty will present her piece « Hard To Be Soft. A Belfast Prayer » (30 July, 8 pm, Teatro Piccolo Arsenale; repeat performance on 31 July, 6 pm).
