INFERNO

CHIHARU SHIOTA – Living inside – Galerie Templon Bruxelles – 27 mai – 24 juillet 2021 – Opening 27 mai 11h-18h.

Comme pour de nombreux artistes, le confinement planétaire a été l’occasion pour Chiharu Shiota d’une réflexion sur l’espace domestique et le cocon familial. « Living Inside » rassemble pour la première fois un groupe d’œuvres intimistes et délicates, autour de la notion de « maison » et la fragmentation de nos réalités quotidiennes.

Célèbre dans le monde entier pour ses spectaculaires installations de fils tendus, l’artiste japonaise a dû en 2020, pour la première fois depuis près de 15 ans, mettre en pause ses pérégrinations incessantes. Confinée à Berlin où elle vit depuis de nombreuses années, ce soudain coup d’arrêt a ravivé de nombreuses thématiques propres à l’artiste : l’immobilité, le silence, l’enfermement, l’incertitude des destinées.

Depuis longtemps hantée par la question des relations invisibles entre les êtres, la maladie et la transcendance, Chiharu Shiota propose une série de sculptures inédites. Réalisées à partir de maisons de poupée, de meubles miniatures, ou de cadres de fenêtres, ses nouvelles œuvres jouent sur la notion d’échelle, de souvenir, et le lien secret entre être et objets du quotidien.

En écho, une série de nouveaux dessins réalisés dans la solitude de l’atelier soudain déserté, décline des relations entre figures énigmatiques. Prises dans des accumulations de flots ou de spirales, des ombres se retrouvent liées par des fils rouges ou noirs, métaphore des connexions entre les esprits.

A travers ces mondes miniatures comme cristallisés, rassurants et inquiétants, Chiharu Shiota nous invite à revenir sur cette dernière année hors du commun. Comme elle l’explique « Nous sommes connectés, puisque nous sommes tous dans la même situation. Tout le monde est assis chez lui à regarder ses meubles et à s’interroger sur le monde extérieur qui est, en ce moment, réduit à un simple souvenir. » Dans un propos doux-amer, elle examine ainsi les codes d’un espace de vie désormais drastiquement restreint mais déjà comblé, peut-être, par de multiples possibles à inventer.

Née à Osaka au Japon en 1972, Chiharu Shiota vit et travaille à Berlin depuis 1999. Après une première formation en peinture à l’université Seika de Kyoto, l’artiste se tourne vers la performance et poursuit ses études artistiques en Allemagne. Reconnue internationalement et exposée depuis une vingtaine d’années, Chiharu Shiota a représenté le Japon en 2015 à la Biennale de Venise.

Son œuvre à fait l’objet de nombreuses expositions personnelles dont récemment en 2018, The Butterfly Dream au Museum of Kyoto (Japon), The Distance au Gothenburg Museum of Art (Suède), Embodied à l’Art Gallery of South Australia à Adelaïde (Australie), Where are we going ? au Bon Marché à Paris (France); en 2019, Beyond Memory au Gropius Bau à Berlin (Allemagne), The Soul Trembles au Mori Art Museum de Tokyo (Japon) ; en 2020, Push The Limits à la Fondazione Merz (Italie), The Dark Side – Chi ha paura del buio au Musia à Rome (Italie), Counting Memories au Muzeum Śląskie w Katowicach (Pologne), et enfin une rétrospective itinérante à la Queensland Art Gallery, la Gallery of Modern Art en Australie et au Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara en Indonésie.

Du 26 février au 9 mai 2021, son travail est présenté à la treizième Gwangju Biennale Foundation en Corée du Sud, ainsi que dans l’exposition collective STILL ALIVE. Werke aus der Shenkung Sammlung Hoffmann au Albertinum en Allemagne jusqu’au 4 juillet 2021.

As for many artists, global confinement has been the occasion for Chiharu Shiota to reflect on domestic space and the family cocoon. « Living Inside » brings together for the first time a group of intimate and delicate works around the notion of « home » and the fragmentation of our daily realities.

Famous worldwide for her spectacular installations of stretched wires, in 2020 the Japanese artist had to put her incessant wanderings on hold for the first time in almost 15 years. Confined to Berlin, where she has lived for many years, this sudden halt revived many of the artist’s own themes: immobility, silence, confinement, and the uncertainty of destiny.

Long haunted by the question of the invisible relationships between beings, illness and transcendence, Chiharu Shiota offers a series of new sculptures. Made from dollhouses, miniature furniture, or window frames, her new works play on the notion of scale, memory, and the secret link between being and everyday objects.

Echoing this, a series of new drawings made in the solitude of the suddenly deserted studio, depict relationships between enigmatic figures. Caught in accumulations of streams or spirals, shadows are linked by red or black threads, a metaphor for the connections between spirits.

Through these miniature worlds, as if crystallised, reassuring and disturbing, Chiharu Shiota invites us to look back on this last extraordinary year. As she explains, « We are connected, because we are all in the same situation. Everyone is sitting at home looking at their furniture and wondering about the outside world, which is, at the moment, reduced to a mere memory. « In a bittersweet way, she examines the codes of a living space that is now drastically restricted but already filled, perhaps, with multiple possibilities to be invented.

From February 26 to May 9, 2021, his work is presented at the thirteenth Gwangju Biennale Foundation in South Korea, as well as in the group exhibition STILL ALIVE. Werke aus der Shenkung Sammlung Hoffmann at the Albertinum in Germany until 4 July 2021.
