Yayoi Kusama – rétrospective – Fondation Beyeler, Riehen/Bâle – jusqu’au 25 janvier 2026

À l’automne 2025, la Fondation Beyeler sera le premier musée suisse à consacrer une rétrospective à la célèbre artiste japonaise Yayoi Kusama (*1929, Matsumoto). Organisée en étroite collaboration avec l’artiste et son studio, l’exposition mettra en lumière les sept décennies de son extraordinaire carrière. En plus de ses oeuvres emblématiques, l’exposition présentera des oeuvres anciennes jamais vues en Europe, de même que ses créations les plus récentes. A cette occasion, l’artiste réalisera une nouvelle Infinity Mirror Room.

Kusama, qui compte parmi les figures majeures de l’art contemporain, a acquis un statut d’artiste culte avec son exploration de structures et de motifs répétitifs, notamment ses célèbres pois et ses espaces constellés de miroirs, qui entraînent les visiteurs·ses dans des univers infinis. L’exposition mettra en évidence sa pratique multidisciplinaire et protéiforme – rassemblant un ensemble de peintures, sculptures, environnements, dessins, collages, happenings et performances – mais aussi son intérêt pour la mode et la poésie.

« Yayoi Kusama » est organisée par la Fondation Beyeler en partenariat avec le Museum Ludwig à Cologne (14 mars – 2 août 2026) et le Stedelijk Museum à Amsterdam (11 septembre 2026 – 17 janvier 2027).

In the autumn of 2025, the Fondation Beyeler will be the first museum in Switzerland to devote a retrospective to renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (*1929, Matsumoto). Organised in close collaboration with the artist and her studio, the exhibition will offer a complete overview of Kusama’s more than seven-decade career. Alongside some of her most iconic artworks, the exhibition will feature early works never seen in Europe before as well as new productions and one of the artist’s celebrated Infinity Mirror Rooms. The artist, one of contemporary art’s superstars, has achieved cult status with her exploration of repetitive patterns and structures, notably her characteristic polka dots and mirror rooms, which carry viewers away into worlds that seem to expand without limits. The exhibition will highlight the wealth of artistic media Kusama has worked with over the years, among them painting, sculpture, installations, drawing, collage, happenings, live performances, fashion and literature.

The exhibition is jointly organized by Fondation Beyeler with Museum Ludwig in Cologne (14 March 2026 – 2 August 2026) and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (11 September 2026 – 17 January 2027).
